Vandalism

St Rd 63 S of CR 1550 N.

The Indiana State Police are investigating the destruction of a memorial site that honors two of Indiana’s fallen law enforcement officers.

The memorial site on Indiana Route 63, just south of Interstate 74 in northern Vermillion County, marks the area where Indiana State Police Lt. Gary Dudley and Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Martin were struck and killed in August 2006 while participating in the annual Concerns of Police Survivors bicycle ride.

Carolyn Dudley, widow of Gary Dudley, discovered the damage as she arrived at the site Tuesday to prepare it for the arrival of the COPS bicyclists Sunday.

The bicyclists will be passing the memorial location during the annual ride and will make a brief stop to honor their fallen comrades.

The damage consisted of numerous flowers pulled from the ground and strewn about, two wooden crosses with the individual officers names adorned were pulled from the ground, partially damaged and thrown into the ditch, and a lighting system that illuminated the site after dark was ripped from the ground and the lamps broken.

The Indiana State Police would like assistance from the public in solving this crime; therefore, if anyone has information that would assist officers in bringing the persons to justice, contact the Terre Haute Post at (812) 299-1151 or 1152.
